Infant Yeast Infection
|
|
The Causes and Symptoms of an Infant Yeast Infection. |
Infant yeast infection happens a lot. Infants are some of the most perfect grounds for rampant yeast growth. Yeast
requires warmth and dampness. A diaper is a perfect example of warmth and dampness. A baby’s mouth is also a major
source for yeast infection, especially considering the new formed skin in the oral cavity. Always wet, soft and
warm.
Infant yeast infections can be passed from the mother to the baby, if the mother is infected while giving birth.
Antibiotics also can cause infant yeast infection. Hygiene is a major source also. Improper care for a vagina in
the female baby is a starting place for candida also. Areas should be kept clean and dry. Avoid harsh soaps or
perfumed lotions.
Diaper rash and infant yeast infection are very similar. Telling the difference between the two can be difficult.
If there are pus-filled bumps or a pattern to the rash, it could be an infant yeast infection.
If this is your first experience with a possible infant yeast infection, you should talk to a doctor to verify what
the problem is. Most of the time, if it is a yeast infection, they will prescribe topical creams. There are a
number of over-the-counter products that will relieve the discomfort.
In addition to topical creams, it is a good idea to try and keep the area as dry and clean as possible.
Paediatricians will recommend some diaper free time to help the area keep dry. Regular air flow will help the
infant yeast infection dry up naturally.
For the ease of reusable diapers, the odds of infant yeast infection go up. The plastic on the outside of the
diaper retains moisture, a major contributor to candida albicans, the major strain of yeast involved in
infections.
The second most common form of infant yeast infection is oral thrush. Thrush develops as white scaly patches and
sores in the mouth. This can be the start of a number of a couple of forms of yeast infection. It can be passed
from the mouth through the baby’s digestive tract to the diaper area. If the baby sucks their thumbs, it is
possible to pass the infection to the cuticles.
Children that are frequently ill or born with a weak immune system are particularly at risk of contracting infant
yeast infections. When a child is sick a lot after birth, antibiotics are often used. The antibiotics eliminate the
healthy bacteria that keep candida yeast under control.
